Why is 18K the highest purity option for white and rose gold?

The typical process to make white gold or rose gold, is to take pure gold and make it an alloy (by adding other metals which will change the appearance and color of the gold). This process reduces the purity of the final product. As white/rose gold consists of several different metals, it cannot be considered 100% pure 24K gold. That is why you can’t have white gold that is also 24K.

One trick some jewelers will use to circumvent this, is to take 24K gold, and simply electroplate it with rhodium to make it look white (while still maintaining the 24K gold inside for the customer). However, rhodium will fade overtime and the ‘white gold’ will require periodic reapplications to maintain the white appearance.

Jewelry Lane does not sell white or rose gold over 18K.

Rhodium Plating

Unless specifically requested, every piece of white gold and sterling silver jewelry sold by Jewelry Lane is plated in rhodium. This protects the jewelry, and also gives it a brilliant shine and finish.

If you want your jewelry to display the natural beauty of 10K / 14K / 18K white gold or sterling silver, please let us know and we will not rhodium plate your order.

Rhodium is a precious metal, and can be more expensive than gold!
